FOR PARENTS, CARERS & ADULTSBEGINNER FRIENDLYSELF-DEFENCE BASICSSATURDAY OR SUNDAY · MILTON KEYNES

01 / THE WORKSHOP

Build self-belief.
Before the flashpoint.

For parents who want to support a child, and adults who want to handle difficult situations with greater confidence. Explore mindset, the way you carry yourself and a calm response, plus basic martial arts options if a situation becomes physical and you cannot safely get away.

THE AIM

Stand with confidence.
Respond with a plan.

Build the confidence to trust yourself, set a boundary and keep someone else’s behaviour from defining your self-worth. Recognise the pattern, know who can help, and see basic physical options for a last-resort escape.

Bullying is never the responsibility of the person experiencing it. These are options to build support, not a promise that a particular response will stop it.

WHEN THERE IS NO SAFE ALTERNATIVE

Simple skills.
One aim: get away.

The coach will show basic martial arts techniques intended to help you protect yourself, create space and reach safety.

  • Protective positioning and movement
  • Simple releases from common grabs
  • Creating space and moving towards an exit

Watch the demonstrations or take part in optional, controlled practice with the coach’s guidance. Contact and adaptations are agreed first. This is a short introduction; regular classes provide ongoing practice.

TRY A MOMENT FROM THE WORKSHOP

“They keep saying it’s just a joke.”

Your child tells you the same group targets them every week. They are worried that telling a teacher will make it worse.

CONFIDENCE BUILT THROUGH PRACTICE

Confidence you carry.
Self-belief you keep.

Regular martial arts classes offer more than physical techniques. Consistent practice gives you opportunities to face challenges, recognise your progress and build trust in yourself.

01 / HOW YOU CARRY YOURSELF

A steadier presence.

Practise standing with purpose, looking up and speaking clearly. Quiet confidence can communicate a boundary without needing to prove anything.

02 / HOW YOU SEE YOURSELF

Your worth is yours.

Working towards goals and learning new skills can strengthen self-belief. A bully’s opinion does not have to become the way you see yourself.

03 / HOW YOU RESPOND

More calm. More choice.

Supervised practice helps you learn to pause, manage frustration and keep thinking under pressure. Bring that same composure to difficult conversations.

The aim is to make intimidation less powerful: to feel more secure in yourself, less pulled into someone else’s behaviour, and more able to choose your response.

THIS TWO-HOUR WORKSHOP

Understand it.
Explore your options.

  • Confidence, mindset and early awareness
  • Calm communication and clear boundaries
  • Basic last-resort self-defence demonstrations
  • Supporting others, reporting and a next-step plan

Mainly discussion and scenarios, plus a brief introduction to basic physical skills. Coached practice is optional and controlled; there is no sparring.

REGULAR NCMA CLASSES

Practise it.
Build it over time.

  • Self-belief through progress and achievement
  • Posture, fitness and physical confidence
  • Composure through supervised partner practice
  • Kickboxing and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu skills

Repeated practice turns learning into experience. Ongoing coaching and a supportive training community help confidence develop beyond the class.

03 / A FEW USEFUL ANSWERS

Before you
put your name down.

Weekend sessions are arranged by telephone after purchase. Here’s how the workshops and booking process work.

Who is this workshop for?

Mainly parents, carers and adults from the club or the wider community. This is an adult learning space, including adults supporting a child. It is not a children’s drop-off class. Any future youth session would need its own age-appropriate format.

Will you show physical self-defence techniques?

Yes. Alongside the discussion, the coach will demonstrate basic, practical martial arts techniques for situations where there is no safe alternative: protective positioning, simple releases from common grabs and movement to create an escape. Any practice is optional and controlled, with contact and adaptations agreed first. There is no sparring. The aim is to protect yourself and get away, while regular classes provide the time for ongoing practice.

Do I need fitness, experience or NCMA membership?

No. Wear comfortable clothing you can move in. You can watch the physical demonstrations, and any role-play or coached physical practice is optional. Let the coach know about access needs, injuries or other adaptations before taking part. Please discuss any venue access requirements with the NCMA team when arranging your session. You can also email John@newcityma.uk before purchasing if you need to check an access requirement.

What if I’m dealing with bullying right now?

You do not need to wait for a workshop to seek help. Raise concerns with the appropriate school contact, safeguarding lead or workplace reporting contact, and keep a factual record. If there is immediate danger, prioritise getting to safety and contact emergency services. This group workshop cannot investigate an individual case.

When and where do the sessions run?

The programme offers four two-hour workshop sessions over the course of a year in Milton Keynes, held on either Saturday or Sunday. Choose the four-session package or an individual lesson. After purchase, an NCMA team member will call to discuss available sessions and confirm your booking date, time and venue.

What happens after I purchase?

A member of the NCMA team will call you on the telephone number provided at Stripe checkout to arrange your booking. We’ll discuss available Saturday or Sunday sessions and confirm the date, time and venue. For any questions, email John@newcityma.uk.

How much do the sessions cost?

The four-session package is £140 per person for four two-hour sessions over one year, equivalent to £35 per session (£35 × 4 = £140). An individual lesson is £65 per person. Four lessons bought separately would cost £260, so the package saves £120. Use the booking button for your chosen option to continue to Stripe checkout.

How can martial arts help with confidence?

Regular training creates opportunities to learn, overcome manageable challenges and recognise progress. The aim is stronger self-belief, a steadier presence and more composure when someone tries to intimidate you. Confidence is built through experience, not simply being told to be confident. Feeling upset or asking for help does not take that progress away.

04 / YOUR NEXT STEP

A small first step.
A more confident
next one.

Choose the four-session package or an individual lesson. After purchase, the NCMA team will call to arrange your Saturday or Sunday session and confirm the date, time and venue.
